Spring 2010:
February 13/14, 2010 -
MARDI GRAS
The North Park Lost Boys attended Mardi Gras and were seeded originally the third in the A pool, but a sleepy Wisconsin desired a first round bye and thus our boys were given the number one seed overall... Oh, how Wisconsin regretted that sleep on Saturday. The Lost Boys played Alabama first and were able to get a solid win 13-09 to carry into their second game against Wisconsin. Wisconsin was not ready for how solid our boys were playing and two early breaks by the Lost Boys were enough to get the Hodags a bit scared. The second half was much of the first, and Wisconsin was only able to get one break back before cap ended the game 12-11 in the Lost Boys' favor. This victory, though only by a margin of one, was the biggest upset of the tournament and quite possibly of the spring season thus far.
The Lost Boys continued their day with wins over Florida State 13-9 and a loss to Texas State 10-15 (but the loss did not matter as Texas has already two losses under their belts). The Lost Boys would enter into Sunday's tournament the second seed (which I still don't understand why), and would struggle to make up for their amazing performance on Saturday. Losing to Indiana on double game point (12-13) would set up another close lost to Tennessee (12-14), and as quickly and brightly as the light was shinning on our boys, it was extinguished. Wisconsin would go on to win Mardi Gras, proving that their loss to the Lost Boys was only a small glitch on their otherwise perfect weekend.
March 13/14 -
FROST BITE
The North Park boys arrived at Frostbite and went 2-4, plummetting the gained ranking from Mardi Gras... A universe point loss to Winsconsin Eaug Claire 8-9 set the tone in the first round. Two victories would follow against Nebraska 13-8 and Arkansas 13-4, but somehow the team lost it in the final round Saturday against Wisconsin Whitewater 3-13. Sunday would end up being a loss against Oklahoma 11-13 and then a 10-13 loss to Northern Iowa.
March 20/21 -
CHICAGO INVITE
With only one day of play, the North Park Lost Boys were unable to get back to the top 4 teams who earned the showcase game. They would force a three way tie in their pool, but Minnsota Duluth would emerge the number one seed because of their win over NP 11-7. Wins over St. Louis 13-6 and St. John's 13-8 would also be part of pool play. The cross-over game would be over Wisconsin Milwaukee 10-8.
March 27/28 -
WHITE SMOKE
The women's team decided to not play this weekend following the loss of our dear friend Peder Hedberg. Though the men's team was able to attend, they were only able to field 11 guys on Saturday and 9 on Sunday... Needless to say, this tournament proved to be a difficult one for those that attended. They were able to post victories over both Xavier 13-3 and Valparaiso 13-5, but had losses against Iowa 9-13 and Notre Dame 7-13 before sleeping at the local Lutheran Church Saturday evening. Sunday morning gave the boys a victory over Marquette 13-6 and then a loss to the Notre Dame Alumni 11-13.
April 17/18 -
SECTIONALS
This will more than likely stand as the most disapointing tournament in our short history. The team, coming off a fairly good run at Whitesmoke (despite losing our dear friend Peder Hedberg), would enter Sectionals as the 7 seed overall behind (1) Illinois, (2) Notre Dame, (3) Northwestern, (4) Indiana, (5) Wheaton, and (6) Ball State. Chicago would earn the 8 rounding out the top two in each pool. North Park, feeling its' main competition was Notre Dame, felt they should not have too much trouble with Loyola (10), Eastern (15), Western (18), and Bradley (23)in their pool.
The attitude of the team changed though in the week leading up to the tournament when 5 starters were suspended from play due to disiplinary points awarded on campus. Though efforts were made to rectify the situation and allow the players to play, North Park stood by it's decision to prohibit play. The Lost Boys would be without two of their starting handlers and three of their talented cutters.
Saturday morning put NPU against Loyola, and it was clear that every game was going to be a dog-fight. They struggled with each O point and there was little that was slowing down Darkwing. Darkwing would get the first break up wind and quickly pounced on the downwind break before half. NPU was in a two point hole and never recovered. Loyola would win 11-9.
The Lost Boys would face Eastern next who had just beaten Bradley 11-6. Eastern, led by super star James Roush, was fearless in jacking his backhand huck into the wind early. NPU was unable to match-up Reaper's deep game after stupid turn-overs and thus found themselves again down at half and looking at another loss. A late second half surge got the Lost Boy's sideline back into it, but it was too little too late and Reaper took the game 11-6.
North Park would face Bradley and Western Illinois next and finally post wins at 11-4 and 11-6. But it would be the last game of the day against Notre Dame that proved to be the most humilating... Notre Dame, who at this point were tired from defending their top seed in the pool, realized the game did not matter at all as NPU was no longer in the running for the top position. Putting in their subs, Notre Dame threw the game 2-11 to NPU in the Lost Boys only other win of Saturday.
Sunday morning would come and NPU was one of 8 teams still vieing for a spot to Regionals in the 7th place bracket. Faced up against Chicago, North Park would win 15-11. Next up was Illinois State, whom the Lost Boys would take out 14-11.
In the game to go to the game to go, the Lost Boys met rival Wheaton. Having not lost to Wheaton since our first game back in 2002, North Park has since consistently dominated Wheaton when our paths have met. NPU would go up 4-0 before Wheaton would score. Things would be traded for two points and then the Lost Boys again went on a run making it 11-4. Wheaton would fight back to 14-10 on a 6-3 run scaring the Lost Boys a little. North Park would receive the disc for the game. Turning the disc over, Wheaton was able to convert the small mistake and laughingly said on their sideline, "that was our last point." But, in a systematic breakdown, the Lost Boys offense made drops and threw the disc away in a fashion unseen since the early days of hump ultimate. Wheaton, as they did in our first game on the hump in 2002, was able to hand North Park not only another loss of the weekend, but the final nail in the coffin for the season; 16-14. Everyone left the field stunned...
